Audience Research and Analysis

This is our audience research which is based upon our questionnaire. The purpose of this information is to show exactly what we found from our results and how we can apply this to our music video.

From our results, it is clear that the majority of our sample were aged between 16 and 20 and the way that they access their music is through Youtube. This tells us that if we were to promote our video, the best way to do this would be on Youtube or at least on the internet in some way. This would then make ouir video more popular as people will be able to access it quickly and watch it as many times as they like.

Our results also tell us that RnB is the most popular genre within our sample which shows that our idea of making an RnB video will be appropriate and appealing to our audience. Our sample also like hybrid music videos the most. Our video is going to be a hybird also, crossing both narrative and performance. This means that our music video will be very appealing to our audience and will encourage them to watch it. This is positive for our music video as it means that we can become more established as a production company and have a popular music video.

Finally, we can see from our results that a 50s theme will appeal to our sample. This is very good for us as a group as it gives us the reassurance that our video will be liked or at least watched by people within our target audience.

Overall, our audience research has shown us that our music video will be popular with them and that we should not make any amends to the idea that we have. If we were a real music company, our video would be successful and would get many views, especially as many aspects of it are so popular.

Equipment List

This is our equipment list, this helps us to choose what equipment we need for production. By allocating the equipment to certain people for a day of filming, it helps us to get the work done quickly and efficiently, as we now know who will film first. However, the person in charge for each piece of equipment will change whenever we start a new day of filming. The fact that we have an equal amount of people, helps us to divide the work equally and fairly.

Location Recce

This is our Location Recce, it shows the location of where we're filming, the possible problems that could make our filming difficult and the risk assessments of the space and time of day. We need a Location Recce so that we can determine whether or not the locations we chose were successful or not. This helps us to make better decisions for our music video.

Mirror Shots - Success

Pulp Fiction - 'Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon' Scene

The camera is using a low angle shot to see John Travolta's reflection in the mirror. This has enabled the camera to be out of sight and still see the actor within the scene.

This therefore shows us that it is possible to successfully conduct mirror shots however, the process in which we do it can be difficult and time consuming but nevertheless possible to do.

Mirror Shots Gone Wrong

Mrs Doubtfire - Kitchen Scene

This is a scene from Mrs Doubtfire whereby her chest is set on fire from the stove. To put out the fire she grabs two pot lids and presses them against her chest. In doing so, the reflection of the entire crew can be seen, with all of their cameras and equipment. This is what needs to be avoided when conducting mirror shots in movies.

Mirror shots

In our music video we are considering using a mirror for filming some of our scenes. This will be in the form of viewing someone in the mirror and then using a shot reverse shot to indicate that they are looking into the mirror and their reflection is looking back at them. The way in which this is done confused us and so I decided to ask my teacher about how this is done in real videos.

He suggested that the best way to do this is film into a mirror from an angle so that the camera cannot be seen in the reflection. From this, I learnt and realised that whenever a mirror shot is used in a film, the shot is never directly straight and this is the reason why. An alternative to this method is to cover the camera in a green material and then edit out the camera. However, this method is more complicated and time consuming and would not be an efficient way for us to get our work done.

Reflections are very important when using mirror shots and we must ensure that the camera cannot be seen within the mirror at any time. Many films have made this mistake before. This can be seen in the kitchen/cooking scene in Mrs. Doubtfire when she is preparing the evening meal.

After watching the video and speaking to my teacher we have decided that we will still use a mirror scene within our video and ensure that we consider all of issues that could occur.

Animatic

This is the animatic that we have created based on our story board. It is a creation of what our video will look like when we film it. We have made sure that are frames are edited to the beat and that they somewhat reflect the amount of time we plan to have them on the screen for in the real video.

Rihanna - What Now

This is Rihanna's latest video for her song what now. When I first watched this video I thought that it was from a previous era/image that Rihanna had been through. The video appears very dark and almost gothic which is a phase that she has already been through as part of her singing career. This made me question whether she is going back into a previous phase or whether she does not enjoy the sexual image that she and many other women have right now.

Treatment 2

Our final song is called Dream by Alice Smith, we found the song on music alley; a copyright free site, meaning we could choose any song we wanted without it being taken off or switched with another song, once put on YouTube. After listening to the song as a group, we decided that it was our favourite and already had ideas about what kind of genre and type of music video we could create.

Our overall idea is based on a 1950's performance music video, although the song is an R&B, this style will be going against the codes and conventions of how the music video for that type of song would normally be like.  As a group, we all had the same idea of how to present the narrative and lyrics to connect to the visuals. One music video that in my opinion reflects the codes and conventions of a traditional music video is Beyonce's 'Why Don't You Love Me', the costume, props and the techniques of how it is filmed reflects the 50's era.

Our original inspiration of our music video, came from the movie 'Grease'.  Their use of costume and props looked really well done, and even if they did had a bigger budget, we can still mimic some of their scenes, for example 'Beauty School Drop Out' is our main influence.  I think our video will be successful because our idea fits really well and links with our song and the live performance part of the video. The thing that will make our video stand out is the fact that most current videos, utilise cars, money, women and over the top 'houses' (mansions).

The music video, will be half Performance and half Narrative. Our main character will wake up in her home and will conclude the video in a hall, performing the rest of the song. We will also have the POV of the lover in her life, who will mimic the same things she does as her lover. During the performance, we will use some backing dancers but keep the main protagonist in focus by having a bright spotlight on her. As shown on our mood board, the costume, props will make it clear to our target audience, what we are trying to aim for in our music video to make it realistic and authentic.

Contingency Plan

As working as a group making decisions together is very important and everyone should have there say, playing an equal part in the pre-production of our music video that where sharing the work out equally and everyone is playing there part , we know that we could face some problems on the way if people miss lesson if they are unwell or unable to attend because of other reasons but to help resolve this problem we all have each others numbers and contact details so everyone can be made aware if a person may not be in and plan around that we can also contact them informing them of the work they missed or the work that they need to do before the next lesson , we also have everyone's email address to send them any more information about the work they need links or PowerPoint so every one can remain on track know one will get left behind.

when it comes to filming only one of our characters is from our group she is the main character in the video but we also have back up dancers so if she was ill for the period of filming we will decided on one of the backing dancers to step up and take the part or another member of our group will take the role so we will not be stuck or unable to film with four in our group we will still have 3 people there ready to be filming and if any one was unable to attend we still have 2 people on cameras we will never be left with limited people that we are not able to film at all so we should always be able to stick to our planning time table.

our ideal place to film may not be available details will be later giver but we have a back up place where we can film a similar place in the school would be OK to film its not ideal but still creates a similar image and we like it as well back up place for location is needed just encase the first is not available to us.

Crew Requirements

In order for pre-production and production to be successful we need a reliable crew to share the work load there is a lot of planning and organising that will take place on the up coming weeks before filming and we all have to play our part relaying on each member of the group to do the work that they have been set. Once planning is complete filming will begin we will need all crew to attend so we need them to be flexible with there time as anytime that we can film we will need to in order to get it complete , punctual will be priority if we set a time to meet they well need to meet this time we may be unable to start with out them and if they are not there , time will be wasted not just filming time but other members time will also become a waste as they may be left unable to do anything. crew must be able to use the camera this is likely as this is the second year of media and filming played a large part in the previous years , this will be needed as taking a number of different shots and angles for each seen to give more footage when editing and also a better variety of shot types will be very time consuming and hard work will will have to share the filming taking turns using the cameras for each shot or scene having just one person filming will be unfair on that member we will all have to take our turn and to do this everyone must be able to use the cameras effectively.

Costume and Props

This is our costume and props list with all of the pieces that we are going to need for our music video. It was very easy to come up with a list however as we were going through it, we found that we needed more and more items then we had actually thought of. With this list, it will be easy for us to gather all of the items that we need and will provide us with a structure for video. With the list, we can ensure that we have all items to hand when we need them and keep all others aside for when they are needed.

Mood board 2

We recreated our mood board as the previous one had too much open space that we weren't happy with.  This is what we made for our final piece and feel it effectively display's the era in which we plan to base our video. This is useful to us as it helps us to generate a clear idea of what our video will look like, particualarly the characters and the possible backgrounds/settings that will be seen throughout the video. The mood board is also useful for showing people within our target audience so that they can get an idea of what to expect from our video.

Treatment

Our final song is called dream by Alice smith , we got this song from music alley its all copyright free meaning that we where able to chose any song from this website. we chose this song as a group after listening to all the choices as it was our favourite and after just listening to it for the first few times we  already had ideas about the kind of video that we could create.

our overall idea is to create a 1950s performance music video although the song is an R&B this style  will be going against the codes and conventions of that genre style music video would typically look like,  but our ideas still goes well with the music and the song , we decided on this idea as a group we all had a similar idea about the idea of being back in time I think this is because the image that the song creates. when listening to it alone it creates this past image the song makes me think of a similar style two singing  in the rain.

but as a group we decided on the 1950s theme and our inspiration and ideas came from the film grease we all agreed and liked the idea making it easy to come to a final decision. I think our video will be successful because our idea fits really well and links with our song and the live performance part of the video as it will be a good part I think the thing the thing that will really make our video stand out as all current video are very modern fast cars money big houses but ours will be different where taking it back with props costume stage sett up lighting to be as similar to that time as possible.

the video will be completely performance will have our main character performing the song on stage with a number of back up dancers they will be the hole focus the main character will be light up buy a spot light following her around stage. the costume for this will be 1950s dresses we have an idea of what they look like from the research images our shown on our mood board this also shows the props that we would like to use  theses will be best to use to make our theme realistic and make it clear to our audience what we are trying to create our props and costume should clearly show to them our 1950s theme  .

Story board

This is our story board for our music video. It shows a frame by frame account of what our music video will look like when filmed. The story board helps us when we are filming our video and can be used for reference if we get stuck or cannot think of what frame to do next. A story board is useful as it acts as a guideline for our final piece and, even if we do not follow it completely, it still provides help if needed.

My Chosen Exhibitor

For our video I would choose VEVO as our exhibitor. This is because VEVO plays all of the mainstream and most recent music and being an RnB genre will appeal to the website even more as this too is mainstream and popular. People mainly use VEVO for genres such as RnB and also for the recent up and coming artists which our song and video suit quite nicely.

Video Exhibitions

MTV is a music company which is owned by another institution called 'Viacom'. In 1985, Viacom puchased 66% of MTV Networks. Then in 1986, it purchased the remaining interest of MTV for $185,000. MTV operates through television channels in which they actively play music and songs by known, mainstream artists along with TV shows revolving around music and real life. MTV has many branches of music which apply to different people and genres i.e. Rock, Base and Dance. The music displayed within the show consist around charts and top 40's etc. this means that the public choose what songs are played on the channel based upon their downloads and purchases. They are very influential as all of the music played within the show revolves around the public interest.

YouTube is an internet based website that provides the public with the opportunity to search for songs and music videos online. The company was founded in 2005 by Steven Chen, Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim. In 2006, Google became the parent company for YouTube and now acts as a Google subsidiary. Anyone can upload on to YouTube and now companies such as VEVO operate through YouTube, further bringing recent music onto the website. YouTube is accessed on the internet through a computer or phone and can be accessed by anyone world wide.

VEVO was founded in 2010 by Rio Caraeff. It is owned by many institutions including Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Google and Abu Dhabi Media. VEVO operates in many countries globally including the US, UK, Greece, Germany and Australia. It is a video hosting service whereby many videos are added to it daily. Music added to VEVO depends on who the artist is and whether they have released new songs. The latest music is usually put onto VEVO and can then be accessed by the public (within the legible countries).

ITunes is a company run by the Apple company which allows people to download music and videos to their computers or apple devices. Vox Pop

A vox pop is like a recorded question and answer session which is linked to audience research. This is our vox pop that we created to find out information about our target audience and their opinions on the concept of our music video. From our vox pop, we found that people did not take very well to the idea of a 50s video however, the people that we were able to ask, were not the idea audience that we wanted. To solve this problem, we also looked at the results gathered from the questionnaire and found that there was much more positive feedback. This shows that when the correct audience is targeted for a media piece, the most efficent and useful results are found.

Lily Allen - Hard Out Here

This music video for Lily Allen's new song explicitly addresses several issues within the media today. She is singing about the way in which women are objectified and the expectations that are put upon them just for being a female.

Laura Mulvey's theory can be seen within the visuals, especially where the dancers are 'twerking' and sucking bananas provocatively. The male character is also seen doing this actions which suggests that women should be seen as equal to men. However, as he is only one man acting in this way it suggests that not enough males agree with this idea and that they are still supporting the objectification.

Intertextuality can also be seen throughout this video. Intertextuality is when a media product an be seen within another media product e.g. a scene from a film within a music video. An example within this video is the balloons that spell out an explicit sentence about Lily Allen. This has been referenced from the Robin Thicke video Blurred Lines in which an explicit message about him is shown on the screen.

The beginning of the video expresses Dyer' star theory and the idea that stars are constructed. Lily Allen appears to be receiving lipo suction as she is not 'perfect'. It can also be heard during the video that the manager is saying how her image is no good and that she has let herself go. This suggests that women are not allowed to relax and must always be perfect no matter what the circumstances are.

Parody

A parody is a media text that has a comical aspect which is an imitation of something else. Today we looked at a video for a Mumford and Sons music video. The video is very deceptive as the beginning makes the audience think that the performers in the video are the actual artists however they are in fact actors from different comical shows. When I noticed who the characters were I instantly found the video more comical. It also led me to want to watch other videos made by Mumford and Sons to see whether the way the video was performed was an accurate imitation of the group itself. I liked this music video because it was different from others I have seen and the comedy aspect made it more enjoyable and interesting.

Target Audience Research Survey

http://fatimaarana.polldaddy.com/s/audience-research

This link takes you to our survey that we created in order to find out what our target audience think about our ideas. It is a closed question questionnaire which means the answers are a case of multiple choice or simply yes or no. From this research, we are able to generate quantitative data whereby we can interpret results into graphs and charts to analyse trends.

Lyric Analysis

This is the lyric analysis for our song choice. The song we have chosen is Alice Smith - Dream. The genre is RnB and explains the love that she has towards a boyfriend or male character. We have also included the inspiration for our music video within the presentation.

Mood Board

For my Mood Board, I decided to do it by hand. I found the majority of the pictures on the internet, along with various screenshots from YouTube. The Mood Board shows our inspirations and influences that we will use to create our music video. Although our chosen song is R&B, we are going against the conventions of an R&B video, by contradicting certain connotations that you would associate with the genre. We started off with the idea of a fashion show set in a different era, which is when I looked at movies like Grease and the 'Beauty School Drop Out' scene. We would use things like backing dancers and a lead singer to convey that our music video is Performance. We would also like our video to be filmed on stage, so it conforms with the performance used in BSDO. The film 'Grease' is set in the 1950's, so we wanted to go with that time frame for our music video. We would include the style of costume, hair and make up, as these also feature in my Mood Board.

Final Song Choice

This is our final song choice that we have chosen. It is written by Alice Smith and is called Dream. We liked this song as the track itself had a catchy beat which enabled lots of ideas to emerge about what our video could be about. We plan to use a 50s theme for this video and believe that the song will suit this very well.

Dizzee Rascal - Love This Town

Dizzee Rascals new video for his song Love This Town is a great video which tests stereotypes. The video is not what viewers think it to be when first seen. Throughout the video, the boys are portrayed as an intimidating gang which terrorise the street however, they in fact do the opposite and help the people in the town in which they live. I like this video as it does not conform to stereotypes and sends out a strong message that not all teenagers are negative. It also shows that even if people look scary, they are in fact normal people who are just like everyone else.

Controversial Music Videos

The original video for Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines' starred all of the women in the video completely naked (besides small underwear) dancing around the three men. This video is very supportive for Laura Mulvey's male gaze theory. This video appeals to men because of the nudity and also highlights the fact that women are being degraded.

Rihanna's video for 'Pour It Up' features women dancing erotically throughout the entire video. Again this would support the male gaze theory as men would enjoy seeing women dancing half naked on a pole. This video has been classified as controversial as it was banned in just 10 minutes of being released!

Miley Cyrus as an individual has become a topic of discussion and a controversial character. Miley Cyrus is best known for her alter ego Hannah Montanna which was a television show on the Disney Channel. This means that her audience was young girls aged from 5 to 12. Now moving on from that phase she is still popular however, her tastes and appearance has changed and this can be seen in her new single 'Wrecking Ball'. She can be seen swinging on a ball wearing no clothes and also dressed in provocative ways throughout the video. This is inappropriate for who her target audience was and shows how her fan base would change.

Miley Cyrus's image could also be explained by Dyer's star theory. Dyer said that a star is a construction and the fact that Miley Cyrus has changed from a 'girly' girl to a sex icon suggests that her managers have altered her image to suit the era that we are living in. They have changed her so that she keeps up to date with the current styles and trends.

Look Right Through - Storm Queen

I was watching the top 10 charts for the week and I saw this video at number 2. It stood out most to be because it is extremely abstract. After studying music video types, I found it particularly interesting to see this video and apply my knowledge to it.

a-ha Take On Me

Being a huge 80s fan, I like to see what the videos were like in comparison with the modern day. I think that this video by a-ha has a great concept and seems very advanced for the era. Take on me was released in 1985 and sold 500,000 copies in the UK. The video also required a lot of effort in making. The band was actually put in touch with Mike Patterson - an animation artist from Warner Brothers in Los Angeles. He drew each of the different frames and used the rotoscope technique to build the image. This is where the drawings are constructed over live action frame by frame. Mike drew over 3,000 drawings for this video and the song and video were a great hit, especially in the US where it was played on MTV for a year.

I like this video because it combines reality with sketch. It is interesting to watch and it fascinates me to think that these sorts of techniques were used in the 80s. Although watching the video you can see it is from the 80s, it is still a video I would expect to see in the modern day. I like that this video is abstract in the fact that it is not something you would expect to see and I think the animation of the video has helped to make the narrative more interesting.

Lip Sync

This is our lip syncing video that we made. We were asked to sing the lyrics to Carly Rae Jepson's Call Me Maybe. This way we could practice our lip syncing for our main music video that we are making. The task was easy to do however when we make our final video we will ensure that we have enough lip syncing footage so that the entire clip looks effective and now jumpy like the one we have created. Overall, it was a useful experience that helped me to get an idea of what it would be like to try and create a music video singing along to words.

Evaluation of A Level Music Videos

This video has multiple editing techniques and addition of animation which enhance the video. However, there are aspects of the video that make it less successful. The use of slow motions works effectively within the action as it allows the audience to focus on what is happening and it highlights the action in the scene. One issue with this video is that the lighting is used very effectively. In the beginning of the clip when the male is singing, the lighting within the frame made it very difficult to see his face and therefore difficult to identify whether he was singing or not. This means that it becomes harder to see what his character is and what his role was at that time. Another issue was that the lip syncing was slightly off in the edit. This means that the words are not being sung properly and therefore makes the piece look out of sync. Although the characters were defined throughout the piece, the lack of sync between the music and the singing made the piece look rushed and amateur. In this video, the conventions of a music video are also challenged. Generally, music video's will have the credits at the beginning of the clip however this video had them at the end. I don't think this worked particularly well as it looked as though the credits were forgotten and quickly added on at the end. I think that the group could have benefitted from more time put into the making of their film and a stronger plan before hand to ensure that everything runs smoothly and then if necessary, re takes can be made.

I like this video. I think that the lip syncing has worked extremely well. The girl pronounces every word properly which makes the idea of her 'singing' the song much  more believable. The video is also very simple using only a green screen as the majority focus within the video. It shows that videos do not need to be complex to be effective. The use of stop motion also shows that the individual can use a range of techniques when producing a music video. One thing that I think could be improved about the video is a short shot within the chorus where the girl breaks eye contact with the camera whilst singing. In my opinion it looks as if she has forgotten the words and is looking at a prompt to help her remember. I think it would have been better to reshoot the scene however it does not have a major impact on the rest of the video as I think the entire thing works effectively.

Dyer Essay - To what extent does a pop stars image influence their audience.

Dyer’s star theory suggests that pop stars are created and manipulated by their managers and are a construction of what is believed to be a ‘pop star’. Pop stars are not ‘real’ people. They are based upon an idea that is generated by society and then they are moulded into this idea.

Managers make a pop star unique to appeal to their audience. Certain characteristics or personalities are connected with the pop star which then makes them an icon. There are many examples which support the unique style of a pop star, both past and modern. Madonna is a very well-known and popular artist. She was particularly prevalent during the late eighties and nineties. Through these eras her appearance changed many times and even now there is a definite difference in her appearance and personality.  Madonna is remembered for wearing a golden cone shape bra. People who support Madonna would have seen this item of clothing as iconic and may have even bought or made one for themselves.  When she was switching through phases, particularly for different songs, her audience may have copied her looks to feel more connected with her.

Without a unique aspect, Dyer said that the individual would not be a successful music artist. This is because they have nothing about themselves to stand out so a development of a connection between the audience and the artist becomes very difficult to construct. It is difficult to relate to a person who has no appeal and so their popularity will begin to decrease.

This demonstrates that having a unique image is important for being successful and that it has a major impact on the audience. If there is no appeal, the audience are not interested. This suggests that the audience want something to imitate or to work towards to become like a person and so an image of some kind is imperative.

Dyer identified the concept of fandom and the idea that people could be more than just a ‘fan’ of an artist or group. Fandom relates to obsession with artists whereby the love for the music and idolising the artist is developed to extremes. Fandom can be seen, in some ways, as stalking. It is a lengthened obsession where the fans want to be just like the artists. They attend every gig and wait for hours before and after shows to see them, even if the chances are slim. They adopt features of the artist which make them feel closer on a personal level. However, these features may not even be real; they may be purposely manipulated onto the artist as they know it will make an appeal to the audience.

This shows that the image of a pop star is incredibly influential upon the audience. If there is an aspect of an artist that is abstract or no one has seen it before, their audience is more likely to pick up on it and want to incorporate it into their own image.

Overall the image of a pop star is highly influential upon their audience. An image is needed for success as this attracts audience attention. Sometimes, attention can be negative however; attention is still being given which still therefore promotes the artist. An image is an icon and people look up to their icons. A unique image provides this iconic factor which helps the audience to relate and feel as a part of the group.

Analysis Of A Music Video - Script

I am analysing Eminem’s music video for Stan.  The video was directed by Philip Atwell and Dr Dre and was released in the UK March 2002. The structure for this video is a narrative meaning that it tells a story through the visuals. The video denotes a woman trying to regain the love of her obsessed boyfriend who is dedicating all of his time and attention to his idol, Eminem.

There is little evidence of Propp’s theory within this video. Characters that are present include the hero, which is Eminem, the villain that is Stan and the princess which is Dido.

Todorov's theory can be applied to this video. The beginning of the video demonstrates an equilibrium in which both characters are living together and tolerating each other. Neither character is happy – She wants him back and he wants Eminem but nevertheless there was still an equilibrium. She was also pregnant with his child and they were going to build a family together. This then becomes disrupted when Stan gets upset one day as Eminem does not reply to his letters and so he kidnaps his girlfriend and puts her in the boot of his car. He is torturing her along the journey and then drives over the edge of a bridge. The new equilibrium is the death of both characters.

Strauss's theory of binary opposition can be seen through this video. There is an element of famous VS non - famous whereby Eminem is the famous character and Stan is the non - famous character. The use of these opposites demonstrate Stan's desire for fame and his desire for Eminem. Also, because each of the characters look alike, the binary opposition helps to create an idea that Eminem was once just like Stan. The way they dress is the same and the way they talk is the same. This could be where Stan became inspired by Eminem and then fell in love with him.

Another example of a binary opposition within this video is male VS female. The male being Stan and the female being Dido. They compete against each other for what they want out of their lives. In the end, Stan believes he has won, he kidnaps his girlfriend which therefore prevents her from getting what she wants. This conforms to a stereotype of males and dominant over females. However, the fact that they both die suggests that  no body wins as neither one get what they desire.

Goodwin's theory of the 6 features that a media text must have can also be recognised throughout this piece. In several parts of the video, there are connections between the music video and the lyrics.

(In this part of the video Dido sings 'it will all be grey' and as this happens the camera pans across the pictures of Eminem on the wall and they are seen in a grey scale colour)

(In this part of the video Stan is saying how 'he got a tattoo with your name across the chest' and the visuals show him getting a tattoo of Eminem's nick name 'Slim Shady'.)

(in this part of the video, Stan is singing about when he met Eminem and the visuals then take the audience to the music store where Eminem was signing autographs. This is where Stan gets to meet and hug his idol for the first time)

A final example of the relationship between the lyrics and video Is when Stan is saying 'sometimes I even cut myself to see how much it bleeds'. At this point, there is a picture of a red handprint on a blank page which looks as if it had been covered in blood and pressed onto the paper.

Another element is voyeurism. This is where aspects of the video look as if they have been filmed without the actor knowing they are there. An example of this can be seen here when Dido is sitting on the floor and singing. She isn't looking at the camera and it seems that she doesn't realise it is there. This could also be seen when she sits on the toilet. This is a private situation that is not filmed as it is very personal.

Voyeurism can also be seen when Stan is in the basement looking at the 'shrine' he has created for Eminem.  Again, it is a personal moment for Stan and is not something that would be shared with everyone.

Iconography must be seen in a music video for it t be successful. Iconography can be seen through the appearance of Eminem. Eminem has blonde hair and at the beginning of the video we see that Stan dyes his hair blonde. This shows that he sees Eminem as an icon and wants to be like him. Also, throughout the song, Stan sings a line saying that his brother is a big fan of Eminem, even bigger than he is. This is then recognised at the end of the video when his brother takes down his hood in the cemetery and has blonde highlights in his hair.

It is also important for the video to display close ups of the artist. This promotes the artist and gives the audience an image to remember and identify with. Close ups of Eminem can be seen here (3.41) and here (6.23). His face is clear in the shot each time and is the only focus within the frame. It helps the audience to remember his face. Also, because it promotes him as an artist, if they see his album in a shop with his face on in, they are more likely to link it back with the video and therefore buy the album.

Dyers theory of fandom suggests that people share a love for a specific topic. Stan is a clear fan of Eminem and this can be seen through many aspects of the film. The idea of fandom can also be said to be extreme where the fan becomes infatuated with artist and does obsessive things.

Stan has become obsessive of Eminem. He has a room dedicated to Eminem where the walls are covered in his pictures. He always sends letters to him hoping for a reply, not realising that has a famous person, he does not always have time t read and reply. Stan also got a tattoo of Eminem's nick name 'Slim Shady' across his chest. This connotes a commitment to Eminem and the idea that he will never leave him. It also shows that Eminem is a part of him and that part will never die.

Stan also explains during the song how he cuts himself to see how much it bleeds. He cuts himself for Eminem so that he can get a thrill out of what he is doing. It could also be used as a sympathy line to gain attention from Eminem and see if it will affect his chances of being with him.

Stan is in love with Eminem so much that he even sticks pictures of them together to make them look like a couple. This sort of action is not stereotypical of a grown man but more of a teenage girl. Nevertheless, it still shows how Stan feels about Eminem and what he wants to happen in the future.

Everywhere Stan looks, Eminem is there. Not only is there pictures around his basement, the small television always plays footage of Eminem. Another way in which this can be seen is in the car. When he takes his girlfriend a picture can be seen hanging from the centre mirror; it is an image of Eminem. When the car crashed, the image falls to the grown connoting that as they have died, the love for Eminem has also died and he does not exist in Stan's life anymore.

Dyer also said that artists must have a uniqueness which makes them different from everybody else. Eminem is unique in several ways and one of them is the fact that he is white. Stereotypically, when Eminem first came into rap, all other rap artists were black. He was the first white artist which definitely made him stand out from the crowd. As a result of being so different, it could be said that this is why Stan fell for him so much. Eminem had the courage to stand up and do what we wanted and so Stan wants to do the same thing.

Eminem's blonde hair is also iconic to Eminem. The hair represents his youth and how he portrayed himself when he was younger. Now, Eminem has gone back to his natural hair colour and is becoming a mature artist that is representative of his age.

Propp's Theory

Todorov's Theory

Todorov said that every media text has to have a narrative of at least three stages. The first stage is equilibrium. This is where everything is normal and nothing is wrong. The next stage is the disruption. This is where the equilibrium is ruined or disrupted. The final stage is the new equilibrium. This is where the problem has been resolved and a new happiness has taken place.

This video expresses Todorov's theory at the very beginning of the video. To start, the two characters have landed in the jungle. This is the equilibrium. The male character then gets eaten by a tiger which represents the disruption of the equilibrium. The female character realises that he has been attacked and so she runs away. She then reaches a new equilibrium whereby she feels comfortable in the jungle and acts as a 'queen' of the jungle.
