Audience Research and Analysis

This is our audience research which is based upon our questionnaire. The purpose of this information is to show exactly what we found from our results and how we can apply this to our music video.

From our results, it is clear that the majority of our sample were aged between 16 and 20 and the way that they access their music is through Youtube. This tells us that if we were to promote our video, the best way to do this would be on Youtube or at least on the internet in some way. This would then make ouir video more popular as people will be able to access it quickly and watch it as many times as they like.

Our results also tell us that RnB is the most popular genre within our sample which shows that our idea of making an RnB video will be appropriate and appealing to our audience. Our sample also like hybrid music videos the most. Our video is going to be a hybird also, crossing both narrative and performance. This means that our music video will be very appealing to our audience and will encourage them to watch it. This is positive for our music video as it means that we can become more established as a production company and have a popular music video.

Finally, we can see from our results that a 50s theme will appeal to our sample. This is very good for us as a group as it gives us the reassurance that our video will be liked or at least watched by people within our target audience.

Overall, our audience research has shown us that our music video will be popular with them and that we should not make any amends to the idea that we have. If we were a real music company, our video would be successful and would get many views, especially as many aspects of it are so popular.

Equipment List

This is our equipment list, this helps us to choose what equipment we need for production. By allocating the equipment to certain people for a day of filming, it helps us to get the work done quickly and efficiently, as we now know who will film first. However, the person in charge for each piece of equipment will change whenever we start a new day of filming. The fact that we have an equal amount of people, helps us to divide the work equally and fairly.

Location Recce

This is our Location Recce, it shows the location of where we're filming, the possible problems that could make our filming difficult and the risk assessments of the space and time of day. We need a Location Recce so that we can determine whether or not the locations we chose were successful or not. This helps us to make better decisions for our music video.

Mirror Shots - Success

Pulp Fiction - 'Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon' Scene

The camera is using a low angle shot to see John Travolta's reflection in the mirror. This has enabled the camera to be out of sight and still see the actor within the scene.

This therefore shows us that it is possible to successfully conduct mirror shots however, the process in which we do it can be difficult and time consuming but nevertheless possible to do.

Mirror Shots Gone Wrong

Mrs Doubtfire - Kitchen Scene

This is a scene from Mrs Doubtfire whereby her chest is set on fire from the stove. To put out the fire she grabs two pot lids and presses them against her chest. In doing so, the reflection of the entire crew can be seen, with all of their cameras and equipment. This is what needs to be avoided when conducting mirror shots in movies.

Mirror shots

In our music video we are considering using a mirror for filming some of our scenes. This will be in the form of viewing someone in the mirror and then using a shot reverse shot to indicate that they are looking into the mirror and their reflection is looking back at them. The way in which this is done confused us and so I decided to ask my teacher about how this is done in real videos.

He suggested that the best way to do this is film into a mirror from an angle so that the camera cannot be seen in the reflection. From this, I learnt and realised that whenever a mirror shot is used in a film, the shot is never directly straight and this is the reason why. An alternative to this method is to cover the camera in a green material and then edit out the camera. However, this method is more complicated and time consuming and would not be an efficient way for us to get our work done.

Reflections are very important when using mirror shots and we must ensure that the camera cannot be seen within the mirror at any time. Many films have made this mistake before. This can be seen in the kitchen/cooking scene in Mrs. Doubtfire when she is preparing the evening meal.

After watching the video and speaking to my teacher we have decided that we will still use a mirror scene within our video and ensure that we consider all of issues that could occur.

Animatic

This is the animatic that we have created based on our story board. It is a creation of what our video will look like when we film it. We have made sure that are frames are edited to the beat and that they somewhat reflect the amount of time we plan to have them on the screen for in the real video.

Rihanna - What Now

This is Rihanna's latest video for her song what now. When I first watched this video I thought that it was from a previous era/image that Rihanna had been through. The video appears very dark and almost gothic which is a phase that she has already been through as part of her singing career. This made me question whether she is going back into a previous phase or whether she does not enjoy the sexual image that she and many other women have right now.

Treatment 2

Our final song is called Dream by Alice Smith, we found the song on music alley; a copyright free site, meaning we could choose any song we wanted without it being taken off or switched with another song, once put on YouTube. After listening to the song as a group, we decided that it was our favourite and already had ideas about what kind of genre and type of music video we could create.

Our overall idea is based on a 1950's performance music video, although the song is an R&B, this style will be going against the codes and conventions of how the music video for that type of song would normally be like.  As a group, we all had the same idea of how to present the narrative and lyrics to connect to the visuals. One music video that in my opinion reflects the codes and conventions of a traditional music video is Beyonce's 'Why Don't You Love Me', the costume, props and the techniques of how it is filmed reflects the 50's era.

Our original inspiration of our music video, came from the movie 'Grease'.  Their use of costume and props looked really well done, and even if they did had a bigger budget, we can still mimic some of their scenes, for example 'Beauty School Drop Out' is our main influence.  I think our video will be successful because our idea fits really well and links with our song and the live performance part of the video. The thing that will make our video stand out is the fact that most current videos, utilise cars, money, women and over the top 'houses' (mansions).

The music video, will be half Performance and half Narrative. Our main character will wake up in her home and will conclude the video in a hall, performing the rest of the song. We will also have the POV of the lover in her life, who will mimic the same things she does as her lover. During the performance, we will use some backing dancers but keep the main protagonist in focus by having a bright spotlight on her. As shown on our mood board, the costume, props will make it clear to our target audience, what we are trying to aim for in our music video to make it realistic and authentic.

Contingency Plan

As working as a group making decisions together is very important and everyone should have there say, playing an equal part in the pre-production of our music video that where sharing the work out equally and everyone is playing there part , we know that we could face some problems on the way if people miss lesson if they are unwell or unable to attend because of other reasons but to help resolve this problem we all have each others numbers and contact details so everyone can be made aware if a person may not be in and plan around that we can also contact them informing them of the work they missed or the work that they need to do before the next lesson , we also have everyone's email address to send them any more information about the work they need links or PowerPoint so every one can remain on track know one will get left behind.

when it comes to filming only one of our characters is from our group she is the main character in the video but we also have back up dancers so if she was ill for the period of filming we will decided on one of the backing dancers to step up and take the part or another member of our group will take the role so we will not be stuck or unable to film with four in our group we will still have 3 people there ready to be filming and if any one was unable to attend we still have 2 people on cameras we will never be left with limited people that we are not able to film at all so we should always be able to stick to our planning time table.

our ideal place to film may not be available details will be later giver but we have a back up place where we can film a similar place in the school would be OK to film its not ideal but still creates a similar image and we like it as well back up place for location is needed just encase the first is not available to us.

Crew Requirements

In order for pre-production and production to be successful we need a reliable crew to share the work load there is a lot of planning and organising that will take place on the up coming weeks before filming and we all have to play our part relaying on each member of the group to do the work that they have been set. Once planning is complete filming will begin we will need all crew to attend so we need them to be flexible with there time as anytime that we can film we will need to in order to get it complete , punctual will be priority if we set a time to meet they well need to meet this time we may be unable to start with out them and if they are not there , time will be wasted not just filming time but other members time will also become a waste as they may be left unable to do anything. crew must be able to use the camera this is likely as this is the second year of media and filming played a large part in the previous years , this will be needed as taking a number of different shots and angles for each seen to give more footage when editing and also a better variety of shot types will be very time consuming and hard work will will have to share the filming taking turns using the cameras for each shot or scene having just one person filming will be unfair on that member we will all have to take our turn and to do this everyone must be able to use the cameras effectively.

Costume and Props

This is our costume and props list with all of the pieces that we are going to need for our music video. It was very easy to come up with a list however as we were going through it, we found that we needed more and more items then we had actually thought of. With this list, it will be easy for us to gather all of the items that we need and will provide us with a structure for video. With the list, we can ensure that we have all items to hand when we need them and keep all others aside for when they are needed.

Mood board 2

We recreated our mood board as the previous one had too much open space that we weren't happy with.  This is what we made for our final piece and feel it effectively display's the era in which we plan to base our video. This is useful to us as it helps us to generate a clear idea of what our video will look like, particualarly the characters and the possible backgrounds/settings that will be seen throughout the video. The mood board is also useful for showing people within our target audience so that they can get an idea of what to expect from our video.

Treatment

Our final song is called dream by Alice smith , we got this song from music alley its all copyright free meaning that we where able to chose any song from this website. we chose this song as a group after listening to all the choices as it was our favourite and after just listening to it for the first few times we  already had ideas about the kind of video that we could create.

our overall idea is to create a 1950s performance music video although the song is an R&B this style  will be going against the codes and conventions of that genre style music video would typically look like,  but our ideas still goes well with the music and the song , we decided on this idea as a group we all had a similar idea about the idea of being back in time I think this is because the image that the song creates. when listening to it alone it creates this past image the song makes me think of a similar style two singing  in the rain.

but as a group we decided on the 1950s theme and our inspiration and ideas came from the film grease we all agreed and liked the idea making it easy to come to a final decision. I think our video will be successful because our idea fits really well and links with our song and the live performance part of the video as it will be a good part I think the thing the thing that will really make our video stand out as all current video are very modern fast cars money big houses but ours will be different where taking it back with props costume stage sett up lighting to be as similar to that time as possible.

the video will be completely performance will have our main character performing the song on stage with a number of back up dancers they will be the hole focus the main character will be light up buy a spot light following her around stage. the costume for this will be 1950s dresses we have an idea of what they look like from the research images our shown on our mood board this also shows the props that we would like to use  theses will be best to use to make our theme realistic and make it clear to our audience what we are trying to create our props and costume should clearly show to them our 1950s theme  .

Story board

This is our story board for our music video. It shows a frame by frame account of what our music video will look like when filmed. The story board helps us when we are filming our video and can be used for reference if we get stuck or cannot think of what frame to do next. A story board is useful as it acts as a guideline for our final piece and, even if we do not follow it completely, it still provides help if needed.
